Does anyone agree that the only way to ascend spiritually is through yourself?

Everyone seems to think that through some scripts or daily ritual chant that automatically be accepted into eternal happiness. Why more people do not go with what makes them happy? within constructs his own moral fiber, of course. Am I alone here?
